March 28, 2008 Sparx's Third Show!
Cowtown Coliseum! First time to run in
front of spectators!  Great Job Sparx
and
Tricia!  They placed 4th overall!
We purchased Sparx in December
2007.  She was green broke (see
definition below) and had just been
started on barrels and was trotting
the pattern.  Tricia has been
finishing her training and started to
haul her to shows along with her
stallion
Dodge.  We are very happy
that she has turned out to be a
natural at the barrels and we are
looking forward to seeing how far
Tricia and this mare will go together!
We are also looking into getting her
double registered with the
Foundation Quarter Horse Registry
or the National Foundation Quarter
Horse Association.  According to our
research she should be 87.5%
Foundation bred, so she should
definitely qualify.  Be sure to say Hi
to Sparx when you visit the barn!
Trivia
What is green broke?

  • A green broke horse
    should move forward on
    cue

  • Whoa (stop) when
    asked

  • Be guided by direct
    reins (meaning that
    pressure on the left rein
    turns the horse to the
    left)

  • Walk, trot and lope both
    directions when asked,
    (Though not with
    perfect leads or
    transitions)

This the minimum
requirements, unfortunately
there are a lot of people who
would describe their horses
as “trained,” who could not
pass this test.

Just because the horse
doesn’t buck when you sit on
him, does not mean he is
trained. Some horses get
used to certain habits such as
following another horse down
a familiar trail, and appear
way more trained than he
actually is. Take the same
horse to a new situation, or try
something different, and the
rider finds that the horse
doesn’t actually know the
basics – he’s not even green
broke! The ultimate well
trained horse will respond
correctly to the cues in all
situations; a green horse
might make mistakes, but
improve with work.
