| Trivia What is D's? 1D, 2D, 3D, 4D, 5D? D stands for division. It is a way of handicapping barrel racing. Barrel racing has become much more popular for people since they started doing "D" classes. The way it works depends on the arena putting on the show, but usually there can be between 3 to 5D's with different placings in each D. For example, we will use the show that Tricia is running in Rendon in November, 2005. Say the fastest runner runs a 15.000 flat. She/he will be 1st place in the 1D. The next fastest time would be second place and so on, as far as the arena wants to place it. Then, if the splits are 1/2 seconds, they would add 1/2 second to the fastest time, which would then be 15.500. Whoever gets AFTER that time first is 1st place in the 2D. So if you got a 15.501or above you would place in the 2D, but if you got a 15.499 you would still only place in the 1D. Say first place in the 2D was a 15.775. The arena would then add a 1/2 second to that time. Making the 3D start at a 16.275 or above. And so on as far as it goes. Some arena's do one second splits, some do 1/2,1/2, 1 second splits whichever way they decide is fine. Why do they do this? It is beneficial in several ways. First, it increases the amount of entries, because even a new barrel horse, or one that isn't of the fastest caliber can still have a chance to win. For example, Tricia has finished training Hemi, but he still is not seasoned, he has a lot of fine tuning that he still needs, if they did not have D's, it would be another year until Tricia could justify showing a horse that is not consistently fast enough to place with the top runners. But with the D's, she has a much better chance of winning as much money as the faster, more experienced horses. She will be competing only against people who run around the same times that she does. Is it fair to the people who run the fastest? Yes. With more people entering there will be bigger paybacks, and they will just be competing mainly against people on their own level. There are still plenty of barrel shows that don't do this, so the top, top runners can always compete in those shows. But for everyone else it makes Barrel racing more affordable and winning more attainable as long as you can run a good, clean run. |
